A Study of Energy and Locality Effects using Space-filling Curves
The cost of energy is becoming an increasingly important driver for the
operating cost of HPC systems, adding yet another facet to the challenge of
producing efficient code. In this paper, we investigate the energy implications
of trading computation for locality using Hilbert and Morton space-filling
curves with dense matrix-matrix multiplication. The advantage of these curves
is that they exhibit an inherent tiling effect without requiring specific
architecture tuning. By accessing the matrices in the order determined by the
space-filling curves, we can trade computation for locality. The index
computation overhead of the Morton curve is found to be balanced against its
locality and energy efficiency, while the overhead of the Hilbert curve
outweighs its improvements on our test system.Comment: Proceedings of the 2014 IEEE International Parallel & Distributed

Operating Power Grids with Few Flow Control Buses
Future power grids will offer enhanced controllability due to the increased
availability of power flow control units (FACTS). As the installation of
control units in the grid is an expensive investment, we are interested in
using few controllers to achieve high controllability. In particular, two
questions arise: How many flow control buses are necessary to obtain globally
optimal power flows? And if fewer flow control buses are available, what can we
achieve with them? Using steady state IEEE benchmark data sets, we explore
experimentally that already a small number of controllers placed at certain
grid buses suffices to achieve globally optimal power flows. We present a
graph-theoretic explanation for this behavior. To answer the second question we
perform a set of experiments that explore the existence and costs of feasible
power flow solutions at increased loads with respect to the number of flow
control buses in the grid. We observe that adding a small number of flow
control buses reduces the flow costs and extends the existence of feasible
solutions at increased load.Comment: extended version of an ACM e-Energy 2015 poster/workshop pape
RVSDG: An Intermediate Representation for Optimizing Compilers
Intermediate Representations (IRs) are central to optimizing compilers as the
way the program is represented may enhance or limit analyses and
transformations. Suitable IRs focus on exposing the most relevant information
and establish invariants that different compiler passes can rely on. While
control-flow centric IRs appear to be a natural fit for imperative programming
languages, analyses required by compilers have increasingly shifted to
understand data dependencies and work at multiple abstraction layers at the
same time. This is partially evidenced in recent developments such as the MLIR
proposed by Google. However, rigorous use of data flow centric IRs in general
purpose compilers has not been evaluated for feasibility and usability as
previous works provide no practical implementations. We present the
Regionalized Value State Dependence Graph (RVSDG) IR for optimizing compilers.
The RVSDG is a data flow centric IR where nodes represent computations, edges
represent computational dependencies, and regions capture the hierarchical
structure of programs. It represents programs in demand-dependence form,
implicitly supports structured control flow, and models entire programs within
a single IR. We provide a complete specification of the RVSDG, construction and
destruction methods, as well as exemplify its utility by presenting Dead Node
and Common Node Elimination optimizations. We implemented a prototype compiler
and evaluate it in terms of performance, code size, compilation time, and
representational overhead. Our results indicate that the RVSDG can serve as a
competitive IR in optimizing compilers while reducing complexity
A new test configuration to determine the slip modulus of connections between crosswise bonded boards
A new test method is presented that allows for a more accurate determination of the slip modulus of crossing areas between orthogonally bonded boards compared to the methods used so far. The slip moduli obtained by the new method are compared to the values evaluated from bending tests with CLT beams and from tests with crossing areas subjected to unidirectional shear stresses and the agreement is found to be good
Connections with glued-in rods in trusses made of Beech-LVL
The suitability of axially loaded glued-in rods to connect diagonals with chords in trusses made of Beech-LVL is studied experimentally. In a first step the strength and stiffness properties and the necessary structural boundary conditions (minimum spacing and distances, anchoring length) are determined and compared with the state of the art. To verify the parameters as well as the load-bearing behaviour, results of full-scale tests with trusses (span 10 m, static height 1.25 m) with different node configurations are presented
